Characterizing Inclusive Strategies that Retain Black Students in Computer Science to Graduation and Beyond

This project aims to serve the national interest by identifying factors that lead to the lack of diversity in computing professions. The goals are to identify inclusive strategies for success in computing programs and investigate ways to increase the retention and post-graduation success of underrepresented minority students in computing.

AICyberEd: Mathematically-grounded Metaphors to Teach AI-Related Cybersecurity

The goal of the reseach is to improve middle school students’ use of security “best-practices” in their day-to-day online activities, while enhancing their fundamental understanding of the underlying security principles and math concepts that drive AI and cybersecurity technologies. Additional expected long-term outcomes include the potential for improved student achievement in math in later grades and an increased career interest in STEM fields.

Awareness of Social Network Risks and Risks Mitigations

The objective is to assess users’ awareness of social network security risks and familiarity with security risk mitigations.

Assessment of Child Online Safety in Nigeria

The research is two-fold. The first part focuses on young Internet users in Nigeria. The objective is to assess young users' knowledge and experience of online risks, identify behaviors that expose them to the risks, and evaluate their capacity to manage the risks. The second part of the research is aimed at assessing the capacity of teachers and educators to protect their pupils/students from online threats.

Elections in Nigeria: Weaponization of Fake News and Hate Speech via Social Media Platforms

The problems of fake news and hate speech have attained a global dimension, and Nigeria is not spared their scourges. The criticality of the effects of fake news and hate speech on elections and the potential impacts, including subverting the will of the citizens, make exploring the propagation of fake news and hate speech during elections more pertinent. In this study, we investigate the prevalence, nature, effects, creators, and propagators of fake news and hate speech via social media platforms during elections in Nigeria.
